At Forest Stone we supply swimming pool copings and pool surround paving in natural limestone and Italian outdoor porcelain, for homeowners, landscape architects and pool contractors across the UK. From bullnose and pencil round pool copings to 40mm downstands, radius pieces and Roman ends, we help you match the waterline edge to the terrace around it, so the whole pool area reads as one considered design.

Every limestone we recommend for pools has been independently slip tested, and we share the full reports so you can choose with confidence. If you are planning a new pool or refreshing an existing one, send us your plans and we will help you pick the right stone, profile and finish.

Safety, Slip Resistance & Water Performance

Pendulum Tested Safety

We have every stone independently pendulum tested, wet and dry, with both a shod and a barefoot slider, and we publish the full results below. Slip figures are a helpful guide rather than an absolute: real-world grip also depends on finish, falls, cleaning and how a surface is used.

For commercial pools, surfaces need to reach R11 (roughly PTV 36+) across all tests. All of our outdoor porcelain does, but not all of our limestone, so we will always point you to the right material. For private pools, you are free to choose the stone you are comfortable with, and we are happy to talk you through the results.

Chemical & UV Durability

Materials resistant to salt water, chlorine, algae treatments, and harsh freeze-thaw winter cycles without fading or degrading.

Seamless Surround Terracing

Match waterline copings directly with surrounding terrace, patio, and walkway paving for a cohesive landscape layout.

Independent pendulum tests by Sliptech to BS EN 16165:2021 and UKSRG guidelines, January 2026. Figures are the median results across three test directions. Under UKSRG guidance, PTV 36 and above indicates low slip potential, 25 to 35 moderate and 24 and below high. R ratings are an approximate comparison only, given as a guide.

Lymington Dusk performs strongly wet when shod (PTV 40 to 44) and sits below the R11 line when wet and barefoot (PTV 28 to 29). In practice it is still a very comfortable, sure-footed choice around a private pool.

Lymington Beige has a smooth, soft feel underfoot, and many of our clients love it around their pools for exactly that reason. Its wet barefoot figures are lower, so where grip is the priority we would suggest pairing it with a more textured stone at the pool edge and on steps, or choosing Lymington Dune, Chatmohr or our outdoor porcelain for those areas. We are always happy to talk it through and send samples.

Choosing Swimming Pool Copings

Pool copings do two jobs: they finish the edge of the pool shell and they are the surface people sit, stand and climb out on. A few decisions early on make a big difference to how the pool looks and how it feels to use.

Coping profile: bullnose or pencil round?

A bullnose coping has a fully rounded front edge that is comfortable to sit on and kind to hands and feet, which is why it remains the classic choice for family pools. A half bullnose rounds the top edge only. A pencil round has a much smaller radius, giving crisp, contemporary lines that suit modern architecture and infinity style designs.

Downstands and drop fronts

A downstand (sometimes called a drop front or dropstand) turns the coping down over the edge of the pool, so it looks like a single thick block of stone. Our custom downstands give a monolithic 40mm drop-down edge, which also helps to conceal pool liners and automatic cover tracks.

Corners, radius pieces and Roman ends

Straight copings handle most of the perimeter, but corners and curves are what make a pool look properly finished. We produce radius corner copings and custom curved pieces for round spas and classic Roman-end pools, made to suit your pool shell rather than cut down on site. Sending us your pool plans with your enquiry is the best way to get these right.

Limestone or porcelain pool copings?

  • Limestone pool copings bring natural variation, a soft texture and a timeless look. Each stone performs differently when wet, so check the slip test results above and choose the one that matches how the pool will be used.
  • Porcelain pool copings are very low in water absorption, consistent in colour and easy to keep clean. All of our outdoor porcelain meets R11, which makes it the natural choice for commercial pools or anywhere grip is the top priority.

Water, chlorine, salt and frost

The pool edge gets wetter than any other paving in the garden, so material choice and installation both matter. Our pool materials are selected to resist salt water, chlorine, algae treatments and freeze-thaw cycles. As with any outdoor stone, copings should be laid on a full, solid bed with no voids, with appropriate falls so that water drains away from the pool rather than sitting on the surface. Porcelain needs a suitable priming slurry to bond properly. Rinsing salt and chlorine residue off the surround from time to time will help keep it looking its best.

Matching the pool surround paving

The most striking pools use copings that match the surrounding terrace, so the pool surround paving, steps and walkways flow on from the waterline in the same stone. Browse our limestone paving, porcelain paving and steps and copings to plan the whole space together.

Pool Copings: Frequently Asked Questions

Which stone is best for swimming pool copings?

It depends on how the pool will be used. For commercial pools, choose a surface that reaches R11 (roughly PTV 36+) across all wet tests: all of our outdoor porcelain does, as does Chatmohr limestone. For private pools there is more freedom, and many clients choose Lymington Dune, Dusk or Beige limestone for their look and feel. Our slip test table above shows how each stone performed.

Are your pool copings non-slip?

Every stone we recommend for pools has been independently pendulum tested, wet and dry, with shod and barefoot sliders. Results vary by stone, so rather than make a blanket claim we publish the full reports. Slip figures are a guide: finish, falls, cleaning and how the area is used all affect grip in practice.

What is the difference between bullnose and pencil round copings?

A bullnose coping has a fully rounded front edge, comfortable to sit on and a classic choice for family pools. A pencil round has a smaller radius, giving cleaner, more contemporary lines.

Can you make curved or corner pool copings?

Yes. We supply radius corner copings and custom curved pieces for round spas and Roman-end pools, as well as 40mm downstands that conceal liners and cover tracks. Send us your pool plans and we will work out what you need.

Will limestone copings cope with chlorine, salt water and frost?

Our pool materials are selected to resist salt water, chlorine, algae treatments and freeze-thaw cycles. Good installation matters just as much: copings should be fully bedded with no voids and laid to falls so water drains away.

Can I match the coping to the paving around the pool?

Yes, and we recommend it. Matching the copings to the surrounding terrace, patio and walkway paving gives a seamless, cohesive pool area. Our limestone and porcelain ranges include matching paving for exactly this.
